Professional dental cleanings (scaling, root planing and polishing) are done by Registered Dental Hygienists.
Your cleaning appointment will include a dental examination by Dr. Calder and:
Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is fossilized plaque which has formed on the tooth and will most likely be forcefully attached. Calculus forms above and below the gum line, and is removable with the suitable dental instruments.
Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, nearly invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food waste, and saliva. The bacteria produces toxins that inflame the gums. This swelling is the start of periodontal illness and can effect your general health. Inflamed gums, otherwise known as gingivitis, has been scientifically proven to have negative consequences for heart health, joint replacements, artificial heart valves and stints.
Teeth polishing: Removes stains and plaque that’s not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.
